The BoxingArts Composite Scorecard for the Sugar Ray Leonard / Marvelous Marvin Hagler fight has Sugar Ray Leonard winning the fight 115 to 113. The Official Nevada State Athletic Commission Scorecard also has Leonard winning the fight, but in a majority decision. Judge Dave Moretti scored the fight 115 to113 for Leonard. Judge Lou Fillipo scored the fight 115 to 113 for Hagler, and Judge JoJo Guerra scored the fight a lopsided 118 to 110 for Leonard, thereby giving Sugar Ray Leonard the win. But none of the judges agreed on who won every round, not even the two judges who agreed that Leonard won the fight, so for a more accurate picture of how and why Leonard won the fight, you have to look at how the judges scored each round. If two judges scored a round for Leonard, and one judge scored it for Hagler, it is not unreasonable to assume that the two judges who scored the round for Leonard scored it correctly, and the judge who scored it for Hagler got it wrong. This is no different from a majority decision, where the decision of two judges outweighs the decision of the third judge. BoxingArts looks at how each judge scores each round, and eliminates, or corrects, the scores for rounds where a judge scored it differently from the other two judges. It calls those rounds "outlier rounds". Judge Lou Fillipo, for example, has four outleir rounds, three of which he scored for Hagler, and one for Leonard. When you correct the scores for these rounds, it adds two points to Leonard's score and deducts two points from Hagler's score, giving Leonard the win: 115 to 113. Judge JoJo Guerra has three outlier rounds. He scored rounds seven, eight, and nine 10 / 9 for Leonard, while Judges Fillipo and Moretti scored them 10 / 9 for Hagler. When you correct Judge Guerra's scores for those rounds, it deducts three points from Leonards score, and adds three points to Hagler's score, still giving Leonard the win, but only by a 2-point margin, rather than his lopsided 118 to110. Judge Moretti had no outlier rounds. He scored the fight 115 / 113 for Leonard. That is the correct score for the fight. That is how BoxingArts scored it. BoxingArts does not score fights independently of the official judges. It relies upon the official judges’ experience, qualifications, and ringside presence to determine who won each round and ultimately who won the fight. The BoxingArts Composite Scorecard is the only truly reliable method of determining the outcome of a fight. BoxingArts Judges' Ratings ...
